Why Gratitude

This post is a part of the Season of Gratitude Series. You can participate by writing a gratitude post and telling me about it. For more details, click here.
Today marks the end of the first week of the Season of Gratitude. So far this season, I have added links to 22 gratitude moments. I am thankful for every single submission I received and, moreso, for the ones I have not yet received. The best part of doing a compilation of posts are the ideas that I read about on other blogs. The perspectives and shifts I get to witness. It is really a blessing.
I recently wrote to Rick at Shards of Consciousness that I used to have a problem with the word gratitude. It seemed really old to me, antiquated and proper, a bit stuffy. You get the idea. Then, I would wonder who or what I’m giving thanks to. After all, God is all there is and I am an expression of God. Then, I started to wonder what I’m giving thanks for. If nothing is separate, then what is it really I am giving thanks for.
An exhaustive, futile exercise that proved to be. I would go around and around in circles.
Turns out that being grateful is not about the thing that you are grateful for or the person or deity that you are thanking. Being grateful is about an expansion in your awareness of God in your life. It is like saying, “I see you.” I acknowledge your presence in and around me. I see you in the trees and the sky. I see that you are guiding me and showing up as valuable information in a blog post just when I need it. I see you nurturing and caring for me in my family. I know that you are present within every magnificent cell of my body.
Again, not for God, but for us. To see who we are. To become more of God in the world. As we acknowledge our blessings and focus upon them, we see them showing up in unexpected places. We are on the lookout for God/good in ourselves, in our peers, in our surroundings, and in our Universe.
Gratitude makes us aware of our Divinity. It brings us in alignment with who we truly are.
So why are you thankful today?
