In 32 years, I’ve lived in Trinidad, Miami, Florida, Tallahassee, Florida, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, New York. I’ve been on long term projects in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Charlotte, North Carolina. I’ve travelled to Germany, Jamaica, and almost every city on the eastern coast of the US. Maybe it’s because I lived in 5 houses in a year in my youth, but I am able to make my home whereever I am. It keeps me flexible.

Most people feel accomplished when they buy their first house. Me, I felt chained. I am glad now that I made the purchase almost 7 years ago. My house is now my sanctuary. It is the space where I can strip literally and figuratively. I can be bare. It is a warm place that houses my insecurities and dreams without judgement. It is the place that I can return to for rest and renewal.

Today, I am thankful for my house with it’s creaks and idiosyncracies. I am thankful that it is my home today. More than this, I am thankful that my home is still, very much, in my heart.

How are you thankful for your home today?
