Thanks for visiting! One of the great advantages of giving service is gaining a wealth of experience. I served on the Board of a 400 member organization for 3 years. The last year, I served as the Board President. What I learned as a leader of that organization was priceless. It would take years of seminars and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of coaching to equal the leadership experience and knowledge acquired. [...]

I believe when we're serving others, especially the less priveliged..... this is the real window to life, it serves as the anchor to keep us lo n modest and have more appreciation of the richness around us. The Gift is in the Giving!

I agree that serving others and "being present" are both very wise decisions for making a difference, as well as gaining new insights. It is important in my opinion, however, to spend enough time focused on oneself, as I would argue this is a very good and healthy thing to do.

Thanks for the reminders, Nneka. As the son of preacher man (and woman!), I was brought up in the environment of service that you describe... and I haven't returned to it in quite a while. Your post has made me realize that I'm really missing something in my own life.
