In the summer of 2006, I finally figured out my purpose.

To express God in every moment,
To passionately experience and share physical vitality, soulful relationships, and financial abundance,
To call forth the Divinity within others and help them uniquely experience it, and
To heighten spiritual awareness.

It took a long time for me to get there. At the time, I made a commitment to live in alignment with it. The words are so poetic.

In October, I was at a retreat where I co-conceived an idea to host an informal talk time about spirituality as an alternate service at church. The person that came up with the idea was talking to me about her experience at the Cafe Gratitude. At the same time, I was telling her about the large group of 20 and 30-somethings who don’t want the formal structure of church, but they still want a forum to discuss spirituality. We needed to go to sleep, so we said we would talk about it some more when we got back to Raleigh.

She approached me this weekend to set up a time to discuss the details of our idea and get the wheels in motion. Guess what I did? Nope, I didn’t jump at the chance. Instead, I told her of my goals for the year and my other activities and said I really didn’t have the time or the “bandwidth” to commit to it.

What was I smoking!?!

Well, in the pipe there was self doubt, fear of really stepping into my purpose, fear that I won’t do it perfectly and it’ll be a flop, and a few other crack ideas. I must say that those fears weren’t forthcoming. I had convinced myself that I really didn’t have the time to do it. I had some really good excuses. But this morning, something said, “Why aren’t you doing this? It’s perfectly in alignment with your purpose. Say yes!”

So I called her as soon as I got into the office and said yes, I’ll do it.

It is important to have goals so that you can be focused on what you would like to accomplish. It’s doubly important to have a written purpose so that when opportunities come along that are not on your “list” you can tell whether or not they are a good fit. Leave room in your goal setting for Spirit to guide you on your path. When the opportunities arise that are in alignment with who you are, say yes to your purpose!

In Spirit,
