Every year, millions of folks start off January 1st with resolutions. I usually go through an informal process, but this year I thought I would put it into words and share it with everyone in preparation for the new calendar year. I will do so over 4 posts.
I usually start with a reflection or inventory of the past year. I’ve found that it’s better to write these down.
- Skills - Make a list of any technical skills you gained in the past year. Include any classes you completed or any certifications you received in the past year.
- Beliefs - It is important to catalog your beliefs because they determine whether or not you will be successful with a particular goal that you set. Include your hopes, fears, and doubts, along with positive beliefs. The idea here is to get a clear picture of what you think is possible, where your soft boundaries are (the ones you want to challenge), and where you think your limits lie.
- Gratitude - Coming off the heels of the Thanksgiving Season, you will be full of gratitude for all that is in your life. Harness that evergy and feeling and make note of all of it. Your gratitude list will give you hope and joy in the coming year.
- Accomplishemts - Along with what you are grateful for, take this time to write down your accomplishments for the year: goals acheived, unexpected opportunities that you took advantage of, even near misses. This is your “I can do it!” list.
- Lessons Learned - Finally, write down the lessons you learned from any mistakes you may have made. The things you learned about love, your character, money, or your health, through your experiences. Make note of these lessons so that you can use them in the coming year.
Before you start the new year, it’s important to take stock of where you are. The 5 lists above will help you to get a clear picture of your life as you move forward to new opportunities and adventures.
